Teaching Assistant (1:1 Support – Year 1)

We are seeking an experienced Teaching Assistant to join a Year 1 team at a school in Littlehampton. This role involves providing 1:1 support to children with challenging behaviour, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The successful candidate will work with different children during the morning and afternoon, tailoring their support to meet individual needs and help children thrive in a structured, inclusive environment.

This role requires someone with proven experience in managing challenging behaviour and a deep understanding of how to support children with ASC and ADHD effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 support to children in Year 1 with ASC, ADHD, and challenging behaviours, adapting approaches to suit each child’s unique needs.
  • Assist in implementing individualised learning plans and behaviour management strategies.
  • Work closely with the class teacher and SENCo to develop and adapt support strategies.
  • Create a calm, supportive environment where children feel secure and able to engage with learning.
  • Use tailored approaches and activities to encourage focus and positive behaviour.
  • Monitor and document progress, sharing insights with the teaching team to ensure continuity in support.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Experience working with children with challenging behaviour, ASC, and ADHD in an educational setting.
  • Strong understanding of behaviour management techniques and strategies for supporting SEN children.
  • Ability to adapt teaching activities and communication methods to support individual learning styles.
  • Excellent teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with teachers, SENCo, and other support staff.
  • A patient and proactive approach, with the ability to remain calm and focused in challenging situations.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
  • Relevant qualifications in SEN or child development are desirable but not essential.
