Job Title: SEND/SEMH Teaching Assistant
Hours: Full-Time

A primary school in the Shoreham/Brighton area is looking for a highly experienced SEND/SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team. You will be working with children who have high-level needs, including ASC, ADHD, SEMH needs, anxiety, and depression. The successful candidate will understand emotional regulation techniques and be able to foster an environment that supports pupils’ social, emotional, and academic growth. This role will have a profound affect on ensuring the children you are working with are able to access their education and set them up with the foundations to be successful later in life.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide focused support to pupils with a range of needs, including anxiety, depression, ASC, and ADHD.
  • Work closely with teaching staff to develop strategies for emotional regulation and build resilience in pupils.
  • Assist children in both 1:1 and small group settings, promoting positive interactions and progress.
  • Support pupils in managing challenging behaviour and developing coping mechanisms.
  • Maintain accurate records on pupil progress and collaborate with the SEN team to adapt support plans.
  • Uphold the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies, contributing to a safe and structured learning environment.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs.
  • Experience working with high needs ASC, ADHD, SEMH needs, anxiety, depression, and challenging behaviour.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team.
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils.
  • Must be able to understand and follow the schools safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies.
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably.
