Teaching Assistant (SEN – ASC Support)

Location: Littlehampton
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (SEN – ASC Support)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Littlehampton is seeking a teaching assistant to provide one-to-one support to a pupil with Autism Spectrum Condition. In this role, you will support the child in overcoming social and communication challenges, ensuring they access the curriculum effectively. You must have clear and demonstrable experience working with children with special educational needs, with a particular focus on autism, and a strong understanding of the difficulties these pupils face.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored 1:1 support to a pupil with Autism Spectrum Condition
  • Adapt learning activities to meet the pupil’s individual social and communication needs
  • Assist in the delivery of personalised support plans in collaboration with teachers
  • Monitor and document progress, ensuring interventions are effective
  • Work within a structured framework in line with the school’s safeguarding policies
  • Collaborate with staff to maintain a secure and supportive learning environment

Essential Experience/Attributes

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with Autism Spectrum Condition and associated learning challenges
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
