Job Title: Teaching Assistant (Literacy & Phonics Specialist)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 15:30 (Term Time Only)
Start Date: Wednesday 23rd April

A primary school in Bognor is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant with a specialism in literacy and phonics. This role will focus on supporting young learners in Key Stage 1 with speech and language development, phonics, and early reading skills, ensuring they build a strong foundation for their education. You will also have the opportunity to work across different age groups within the primary phase, adapting your skills to meet the varying needs of pupils.

The successful candidate must have experience teaching phonics, working with young children to develop speech and language, and supporting pupils in their literacy journey. You will work both one-to-one and in small groups, delivering phonics interventions, assisting in classroom activities, and ensuring that every child has the support they need to progress confidently. This role also includes lunch and break duties, allowing you to build strong relationships with pupils throughout the school day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide phonics-based support to pupils in Key Stage 1 and beyond
  • Deliver small-group interventions focused on early reading and speech and language development
  • Support class teachers in delivering the phonics curriculum and literacy activities
  • Work one-to-one with pupils who need additional help with reading and writing
  • Assist with classroom learning across the primary age range as required
  • Supervise and engage with pupils during lunch and break times
  • Follow the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies at all times

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children in a school or educational setting
  • Experience teaching phonics and supporting early literacy development
  • A strong understanding of speech and language development in young children
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic, and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations, and respond to pupils’ needs
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
