Teaching Assistant (Phonics Specialist)

Location: Burgess Hill
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (Phonics Specialist)
Hours: 08:30 to 15:30

 

We are looking for a Teaching Assistant to support Key Stage 1 (KS1) students in developing essential literacy skills through effective phonics instruction and intervention in Burgess Hill. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality phonics instruction, provide targeted interventions for struggling readers, create engaging resources, and implement multisensory approaches to learning. A passion for literacy and reading is essential to impart this love onto children at an early developmental stage.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver systematic phonics instruction and assess individual student needs.
  • Create engaging phonics activities and develop age-appropriate resources.
  • Provide targeted interventions for struggling readers.
  • Conduct assessments to track student progress.
  • Engage students through various methods to foster a love for reading and literacy.
  • Collaborate with teachers to enhance phonics instruction in the classroom.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children in educational settings.
  • Background in using phonics programs such as Letters and Sounds, Read Write Inc., Jolly Phonics, or similar.
  • Experience delivering small-group interventions or one-on-one support.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
  • A patient, empathetic, and nurturing approach.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team.
  • The ability to be adaptable and creative in teaching methods.
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies.
