Teaching Assistant (Autism Specialist)

Location: Burgess Hill
Job Title: 1:1 Teaching Assistant
Hours: Full-Time, 5 Days per Week (08:30 to 15:30)

 

We are seeking a compassionate 1:1 Teaching Assistant to work closely with a child with autism at a small countryside school in Burgess Hill, surrounded by beautiful rolling fields and woodlands. This full-time role involves supporting the child both inside and outside of the classroom, adapting the curriculum to align with their interests, and creating opportunities for meaningful learning throughout the day. The ideal candidate will be flexible, adaptable, and committed to understanding the child’s unique needs and triggers, encouraging a positive and engaging learning experience.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 support for a child with autism, adapting daily learning activities to meet their individual needs.
  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons outside the classroom, integrating nature and day-to-day experiences into the learning process.
  • Create a structured, calm environment and build a trusting relationship with the child to ensure comfort and consistency.
  • Understand the child’s specific triggers and cues to avoid escalation, using supportive, patient strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with teaching staff to adapt the curriculum, ensuring lessons resonate with the child’s interests and strengths.
  • Promote the child’s social and academic development through creative, hands-on learning opportunities in both classroom and outdoor settings.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children with autism, including knowledge of autism-specific teaching strategies.
  • Understanding of the unique needs of children with autism, including triggers and sensory sensitivities.
  • A calm, adaptable approach with the ability to remain composed in new or changing situations.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with teachers and support staff.
  • Capacity to identify and create learning opportunities beyond the classroom to enrich the child’s educational experience.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
  • Any qualifications in education, special educational needs, or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably.
