We are recruiting for a SEN Teaching Assistant in Brighton to provide 1:1 support for a pupil with challenging behaviour, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), and Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). PDA is a profile associated with ASC that is characterised by high levels of anxiety and a heightened drive to avoid demands and expectations. Children with PDA often need a calm, flexible approach, free from confrontation, and require consistent guidance to help them feel secure. Your role will involve adapting strategies to accommodate these needs, ensuring the pupil remains engaged in learning and progresses within a supportive environment

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 support for a pupil with ASC and PDA, adapting tasks to suit their needs.
  • Implement behaviour strategies to address challenging behaviour, maintaining a calm learning environment.
  • Use visual aids and communication tools to enhance engagement and understanding.
  • Collaborate with teachers and other staff to follow tailored learning and care plans.
  • Monitor progress and adapt approaches to meet the evolving needs of the pupil.
  • Contribute to a respectful, inclusive classroom setting that encourages positive interactions.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs.
  • Experience working with challenging behaviour related to ASC and PDA.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
  • A patient, empathetic, and nurturing approach.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team.
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations, and respond to the needs of the pupils.
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies.
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling, or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably.
