Year 1 Teaching Assistant (Phonics Specialist)

Job Title: Year 1 Teaching Assistant (Phonics Specialist)
Hours: 08:30 to 13:15, Monday to Friday

We are seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant with strong phonics experience to join a Year 1 team at a school in Brighton. This part-time role requires a deep understanding of phonics and its role in early literacy, as you will play a key part in supporting children’s reading and writing development. Working closely with the class teacher, you will help to deliver phonics-based learning activities and provide tailored support to ensure all pupils thrive.

This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the early education of young learners, fostering their confidence and enthusiasm for literacy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support Year 1 pupils in phonics-based learning activities, working 1:1 or in small groups as required.
  • Assist in delivering phonics lessons, reinforcing key concepts, and helping children progress in their reading and writing.
  • Use a range of phonics strategies to support pupils, adapting methods to suit individual learning needs.
  • Monitor and track children’s progress, providing feedback to the class teacher to inform planning and interventions.
  • Create a positive and engaging learning environment where children feel confident and motivated to learn.
  • Assist with classroom preparation, tidying, and other tasks as needed during your working hours.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Strong experience and understanding of phonics, including delivering phonics-based activities or interventions.
  • Ability to adapt teaching techniques to meet the diverse needs of young learners.
  • Familiarity with early literacy frameworks and the role of phonics in supporting reading and writing development.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with teachers and pupils.
  • A patient and positive attitude, fostering a supportive learning environment.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
  • Qualifications in education or early years literacy are desirable but not essential.
