Job Title: Year 1 Teaching Assistant (with Strong SEN Experience)
Hours: 08:30 to 15:30, Monday to Friday

We are looking for an experienced and dedicated Teaching Assistant to join a supportive team in Horsham. The successful candidate will have strong SEN experience and a passion for supporting young children with additional needs. This role involves working across two Year 1 classes, providing general support, assisting with lunch duties, and ensuring that the needs of children with special educational needs are met. You will be supporting children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), behavioural challenges, and focus difficulties, ensuring they can access the curriculum and thrive in a positive learning environment.

This position offers an exciting opportunity for someone with experience in understanding and implementing Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) to make a real impact on the educational experience of Year 1 pupils.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to children with SEN, including ASC and behavioural challenges, within the Year 1 setting.
  • Assist in the implementation of Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs), ensuring that targets and strategies are consistently followed.
  • Support children during lunch breaks and assist with lunchtime duties.
  • Work alongside class teachers to ensure effective differentiation of the curriculum for children with additional needs.
  • Monitor and track the progress of students, providing regular feedback to the SENCo and class teacher.
  • Foster a supportive and positive classroom environment, focusing on promoting engagement, focus, and social development.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant in a primary school setting, particularly with SEN pupils.
  • Strong experience and understanding of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and behavioural challenges.
  • Demonstrable experience in understanding and implementing Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • Knowledge of strategies to support focus and attention in children with additional needs.
  • Ability to adapt teaching and learning activities to suit the needs of individual pupils.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team.
  • A patient, empathetic, and proactive approach, with the ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
  • DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
