Job Title: 1:1 Teaching Assistant (working with ASC, Attachment & SEMH)
Location: Brighton, UK
Contract Type: Full-time, Term-time Only

I am working with an OFSTED rated ‘outstanding’ school in the heart of Brighton, committed to providing exceptional educational support to children with diverse needs. We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated 1:1 Teaching Assistant to work closely a student with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), Attachment needs, and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 tailored support for students with ASC, attachment needs, and SEMH difficulties.
  • Work alongside class teachers and SENCo to implement personalised education plans.
  • Support the emotional wellbeing and social development of the student, fostering a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Help all students engage with learning activities, both in and outside the classroom.
  • Use effective communication strategies to build trust and positive relationships with the student, their family, and the wider school community.
  • Assist with behaviour management, using de-escalation techniques when needed.
  • Monitor and report on the student’s progress, adapting strategies to meet changing needs.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience working in an educational setting, or with children/young people with mental health challenges or autism.
  • A strong understanding of the challenges associated with ASC, attachment issues, and SEMH.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and with empathy, especially when managing challenging behaviour.
  • A calm, patient, and flexible approach, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in supporting students with personalised learning strategies, including visual timetables, sensory breaks, and social stories.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • A clean and current DBS that is on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Relevant qualifications in Education, Special Educational Needs, or Mental Health.
  • Training in ASC, SEMH, or Attachment theory.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic or de-escalation techniques, such as Team Teach or similar.
