Location: Brighton
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (SEN – Autism Support)
Hours: 08:30 to 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Brighton is seeking a SEN Teaching Assistant to work with children with autism. In this role, you will provide one-to-one and small group support to pupils across different year groups, helping them access their education both inside and outside the classroom. You will support children who face social and communication challenges, using tailored strategies to help them manage their behaviour and understand their emotions.

The successful candidate must have clear, demonstrable experience working with children with additional needs, particularly Autism Spectrum Condition and Pathological Demand Avoidance. You will be expected to implement effective interventions that address the unique challenges these pupils face, ensuring they receive the structured support they need to thrive academically and socially.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualised 1:1 and small group support for pupils with autism
  • Adapt teaching methods and resources to address the social and communication needs of each pupil
  • Assist in the implementation of personalised support plans
  • Work both indoors and outdoors to create a structured and engaging learning environment
  • Monitor and document pupil progress, providing regular feedback to teachers
  • Adhere to the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with Autism Spectrum Condition and Pathological Demand Avoidance
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
