Teaching Assistant (Phonics & SEN Support)

Location: Bognor
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (Phonics & SEN Support)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Bognor is seeking a teaching assistant who has specialist knowledge of phonics and the KS1 curriculum, with the confidence to work across all key stages. In this role, you will provide valuable support to pupils, assisting them during lessons as well as during lunch and break times. The school is committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to access their learning, and your contribution will be vital in achieving this goal.

You will be working with children who have additional needs, including those with Autism Spectrum Condition. A clear understanding of SEN is essential, as is the ability to help pupils overcome the challenges they face in communication and social interactions. If you have a proven background working with children with ASC and can demonstrate practical strategies to support their learning, we would like to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualised support to pupils in KS1, with a focus on developing phonics skills
  • Deliver assistance during lunch and break duties to ensure a safe, structured environment
  • Work with teachers to implement and adapt learning activities according to the KS1 curriculum
  • Support pupils with additional needs, including those with Autism Spectrum Condition, in both 1:1 and small group settings
  • Monitor pupil progress and report on outcomes to inform future support strategies
  • Adhere to the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition and additional learning challenges
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
