Location: Worthing
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (SEN Focus)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Worthing is seeking a teaching assistant to work with pupils who have special educational needs. In this role, you will provide 1:1 support as well as work in small groups with children who require extra assistance to access their education. Your role will involve working across different classrooms, helping children with autism, ADHD, and other additional needs manage their behaviour and overcome learning challenges. You will be expected to build strong relationships with pupils and help them understand their emotions, ensuring they feel secure and able to participate in all aspects of school life.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for someone with clear and demonstrable SEN experience to make a meaningful contribution to our school community. We are looking for a candidate who is knowledgeable about the diverse challenges children face, has a solid background in supporting pupils with additional needs in either a school or care setting, and is ready to work as part of a dedicated team to support the overall progress and wellbeing of our pupils.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with special educational needs
  • Assist in the implementation of individualised support plans across various classrooms
  • Help children manage their behaviour and understand their emotions through tailored interventions
  • Work closely with teachers and the wider SEN team to deliver quality support
  • Contribute to the preparation and delivery of lessons where appropriate
  • Follow the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies at all times

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with children with autism, ADHD, and other additional needs
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to pupils’ needs
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, SEN, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
