Teaching Assistant (KS1)

Job Title: Teaching Assistant
Hours: Full-time, Four days a week, 08:30 – 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A school in the Portslade area is seeking a teaching assistant to work in Key Stage 1 with pupils who have high needs in SEMH and SEN. In this role, you will provide 1:1 and small group support to children requiring additional help to access learning. You will work with children who have Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, and challenging behaviour. Many of the pupils are operating at an early years level, so a clear understanding of early years educational needs – whether from pre-school or reception settings – is vital. The successful candidate must have clear, demonstrable SEN experience and be able to show examples of supporting children with additional needs and managing the behavioural challenges that can arise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for KS1 pupils with additional needs, ensuring personalised assistance
  • Implement support strategies as outlined in individual learning and behavioural support plans
  • Assist in managing classroom routines and transitions for children with ASC, ADHD, and other SEN
  • Work closely with teachers and the SENCo to monitor progress and adjust interventions
  • Support pupils in developing social skills and managing challenging behaviour
  • Uphold the school’s safeguarding policies and ensure a secure learning environment

Essential Experience/Attributes

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Condition, ADHD, and behaviour challenges
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic, and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to pupil needs
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
