Job Description: SEND Teacher
Location: Chichester, SEND school.
Contract Type: January (Minimum until Easter, with potential extension for the right candidate) – transition period before end of term.
Salary: Paid to scale
About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and experienced SEND Teacher to join our team and take responsibility for working with 16-19 year olds with additional needs. This role involves working with students aged 16-19 with a variety of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The pupils are academically working at a lower age level. The position is initially offered until Easter but may extend for the right candidate who demonstrates exceptional suitability and commitment to the role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver engaging and differentiated lessons tailored to meet the diverse needs of students with SEND.
- Focus on functional skills, life skills, and preparation for adulthood, supporting students in achieving their full potential.
- Manage and adapt to a range of SEND, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD).
- Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapists, and external professionals to implement effective individual education plans (IEPs).
- Monitor, record, and report on students’ progress, ensuring regular communication with parents and carers.
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment that fosters independence and confidence.
- Contribute to the wider school community and support extracurricular or enrichment activities when required.
Requirements:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
- Proven experience teaching students with SEND, preferably within a similar age range or setting.
- Strong understanding of SEND strategies, adaptations, and relevant policies, including the SEND Code of Practice.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Patience, resilience, and creativity in overcoming challenges and supporting students’ individual needs.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable:
- Experience with TEACCH, PECS, or other SEND-specific methodologies.
- Additional training or qualifications in SEND or related areas.
