Location: Worthing
Job Title: Learning Support Assistant
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Worthing is seeking a Learning Support Assistant to provide 1:1 support and small-group interventions for pupils with additional needs. In this role, you will work with children who require help with academic progress, emotional regulation, and managing behavioural difficulties. The successful candidate will have clear SEN experience and a thorough understanding of the challenges children face—particularly in relation to Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)—as well as issues related to mental health. You will be expected to demonstrate examples of effective support strategies from previous work in either a school or care setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small-group support for pupils with additional needs
  • Assist in adapting learning activities to support children with ASC, ADHD, and mental health challenges
  • Work alongside teachers to implement targeted interventions from Pupil Learning Plans
  • Support children in managing their emotions and behaviour throughout the school day
  • Monitor pupil progress and report on outcomes to inform future support strategies
  • Adhere to the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies at all times

Essential Experience/Attributes

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with ASC, ADHD, and related mental health challenges
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to remain calm in challenging situations and respond appropriately to the needs of pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
