Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Worthing is seeking a SEMH Teaching Assistant to support pupils experiencing mental health challenges. In this role you will work directly with children who face social, emotional, and mental health difficulties, providing one-to-one and small group support to help them develop effective strategies for emotional regulation. You will play an essential part in creating an environment that helps children manage anxiety, depression, and other issues while accessing learning successfully. Applicants must have clear, demonstrable experience working with children with additional needs and an in-depth understanding of the challenges these pupils face.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH and mental health challenges
  • Assist in delivering targeted interventions as part of individualised learning and support plans
  • Work collaboratively with class teachers, SENCo, and mental health professionals to implement effective support strategies
  • Monitor pupil progress and maintain detailed records of behavioural and academic improvements
  • Support pupils in developing strategies to manage emotional dysregulation and anxiety
  • Adhere to the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies at all times

Essential Experience/Attributes

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with mental health challenges including SEMH, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, or depression
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
