Job Title: SEN Teaching Assistant – Autism, SEMH, and Attachment Support
Location: Brighton
Contract Type: Full-time, Term-time Only
Hours: Monday to Friday

We are seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to work with children who have a range of Special Educational Needs (SEN), including autism, Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges, and attachment difficulties. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children who require additional support in both their learning and emotional development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide tailored support to children with autism, SEMH needs, and attachment difficulties, helping them access the curriculum and thrive in a school environment.
  • Assist the class teacher in planning and delivering lessons that meet the individual needs of each child, ensuring they remain engaged and supported throughout the day.
  • Implement behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques, helping children regulate their emotions and manage any challenging behaviours.
  • Foster a nurturing and supportive relationship with the children, offering emotional support and building their confidence and self-esteem.
  • Work with the SENCO and class teacher to create and deliver individual learning plans, tailored to each child’s specific needs.
  • Support children in developing social skills and building positive relationships with their peers, helping them feel included in classroom activities.
  • Collaborate with the wider school team, including parents and external professionals, to ensure a consistent and supportive approach to each child’s development.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working with children with autism, SEMH needs, and attachment difficulties, ideally in a school setting.
  • A strong understanding of strategies to support children with emotional and behavioural challenges, including the use of de-escalation and sensory support.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to build trusting relationships with children who require additional emotional and learning support.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team, collaborating effectively with teachers, SENCOs, and parents.
  • A proactive and flexible attitude, with the ability to adapt to the changing needs of the children and the classroom environment.
  • A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is required for this role, or a willingness to obtain one.
