Higher Level Teaching Assistant
Location: Smallfield, Surrey
Actual salary: £27,712 – £30,250 depending on qualifications, plus a £2000 welcome bonus for HLTA with SEN experience*
Hours: 40 hours per week – Term Time only
- Start time: 8.15am
- Finish time: Monday/Wednesday/Thursday 4.45pm, Tuesday 5pm, and Friday 4pm
About the Role:
We are currently looking to recruit a Higher Level Teaching Assistant to work in our SLCN class. This role supports children aged 6-11 years with communication difficulties typically associated with Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism.
The position is linked to another educational centre, sharing the same Principal and Head of School, but each site has its own Assistant Head and team of Teachers and TAs. There is also a full therapy team on site to support staff and students. Although the sites operate separately, students and staff do cross between sites.

Key Duties:
Pupil Welfare and Safeguarding
- Take responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils according to the school’s policies, including safeguarding and PREVENT.
- Provide meaningful feedback on pupil behaviour, relationships, and attitudes.
- Monitor pupils’ conduct and behaviour throughout the learning process and intervene to resolve highly complex, difficult, or very challenging issues and to keep records of incidents, health, behaviour, etc. as necessary.
Supporting Teaching and Learning
- Lead in the absence of any Class Teachers across the school.
- Assist the Class Teacher with carrying out the professional duties of a teacher as outlined in the Professional Standards for Teachers.
- Know and understand the Class Teacher’s curriculum planning and plan, prepare, and deliver assigned programmes of teaching and learning activities to individual, small groups, and/or classes, modifying and adapting activities as necessary within agreed systems of supervision.
- Provide high-quality, challenging, and differentiated educational activities and experiences through teaching a broad and balanced curriculum aiming at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning.
- Develop and implement individual plans for pupils (such as the educational elements in an EHCP), including attendance at, and contribution to, reviews if requested.
Please note that duties will vary, and you will be expected to contribute to the overall aims of the school when required.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Previous experience with SLCN
- GCSE Maths and English qualification minimum Grade 4 or equivalent is essential.
- The Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma or equivalent Level 4 qualification or demonstrate equivalent skill level.
