Higher Level Teaching Assistant (Key Stage 1)

Job Title: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA – Key Stage 1)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Worthing is seeking a dedicated and experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join their Key Stage 1 team. This role is perfect for someone with a strong understanding of early learning and a passion for supporting young pupils in their academic and personal development. You will be assisting in lesson delivery, leading small group interventions, and providing classroom cover where required.

Key Stage 1 is a crucial stage in a child’s education, laying the foundation for their future learning. As an HLTA, you will be an integral part of the teaching team, ensuring that pupils receive tailored support to help them thrive. The ideal candidate will have experience working in Key Stage 1, a sound understanding of phonics and early literacy, and the ability to engage and motivate young learners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality learning support across Key Stage 1, covering lessons when required
  • Lead small group interventions focusing on early literacy, phonics, numeracy, and social skills
  • Work closely with class teachers to plan and deliver engaging learning activities
  • Assist in classroom management, ensuring a structured and positive learning environment
  • Support children with additional needs, adapting learning activities to meet their requirements
  • Monitor pupil progress and provide feedback to the teaching team
  • Uphold the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies at all times

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working as an HLTA or Teaching Assistant within Key Stage 1
  • Confidence in delivering phonics, literacy, and numeracy interventions
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic, and nurturing approach
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations, and respond to pupils’ needs
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • HLTA qualification or equivalent experience; applications from experienced Teaching Assistants with demonstrable classroom leadership experience will also be considered
