Position: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA): SEND School Support Staff (Primary Aged Children)
Location: Worthing
Salary: £90 – £115 per day
Job Type: Monday – Friday, term time only, 8:30 – 3:30
Contract: Full-time, temporary-to-permanent

We are seeking a passionate and skilled Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a forward-thinking SEND school in Worthing. This role involves working with primary-aged children who have complex special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), many of whom exhibit challenging behaviours and have limited communication skills. In addition to supporting students directly, the HLTA will be required to cover lessons in the absence of the class teacher, ensuring continuity of learning and maintaining classroom structure. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to make a meaningful impact in a rewarding and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 support to a child with complex needs, fostering engagement and aiding their development.
  • Offer small group support to children with a range of SEND, helping them access the curriculum.
  • Cover lessons in the teacher’s absence, delivering pre-planned lessons and managing the classroom effectively.
  • Manage challenging behaviour in line with school policies, using de-escalation techniques and positive behaviour strategies.
  • Work closely with teachers, support staff, and external agencies to create and implement personalised learning plans.
  • Assist in the social and emotional development of students, promoting positive mental health and well-being.
  • Ensure a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment, and address safeguarding concerns promptly.

What We Are Looking For:

  • HLTA status or significant experience in a similar SEND or behavioural support role.
  • Experience in covering lessons and leading a classroom in the absence of a teacher.
  • Proven experience working with children with SEND, particularly those with complex needs and challenging behaviours.
  • A resilient, patient, and compassionate approach, with strong skills in behaviour management.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, capable of building positive relationships with pupils, staff, and external professionals.
  • A flexible and proactive attitude, with a willingness to adapt and respond to changing situations in the classroom.

Benefits:

  • The chance to make a significant impact on the lives of children with SEND, helping them thrive academically and socially.
  • A supportive working environment with opportunities for ongoing professional development and training.
  • Experience in a specialist SEND setting that values individual growth and positive behaviour reinforcement.
