Teaching Assistant 

Location: Littlehampton
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (SEN – Specialist Support)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 15:10 (Term Time Only)

A small primary school in Littlehampton is seeking a Teaching Assistant to provide specialist assistance to pupils with additional needs. In this role, you will work one-to-one and in small groups with children who face significant barriers to learning due to moderate, severe, profound, and multiple learning difficulties, as well as those with behavioural, social, communication, sensory, or physical disabilities. You will be responsible for supporting children with demanding behavioural needs, ensuring they receive the support required to access education effectively both inside and outside the classroom.

This is a temporary contract until the summer holidays, offering a valuable opportunity to work closely with a dedicated team in a supportive school environment. The successful candidate will have clear and demonstrable SEN experience and must understand the unique challenges faced by children with additional needs. You will be expected to follow established learning and behavioural support plans, contribute to a structured learning environment, and help foster positive progress for each pupil.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with additional needs
  • Implement tailored interventions to help children overcome learning barriers and manage demanding behavioural needs
  • Support children both inside the classroom and during outdoor learning sessions
  • Assist in the delivery of established learning and behavioural support plans
  • Monitor and document pupil progress and communicate effectively with the teaching team
  • Adhere to the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with pupils with autism, challenging behaviour, and other additional needs
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
