Teaching Assistant 

Location: Burgess Hill
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (Key Stage 1)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Burgess Hill is seeking a teaching assistant to provide support to Key Stage 1 pupils with additional needs. The role involves working both one-to-one and in small intervention groups with children who face learning barriers due to Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). You will help pupils access the curriculum through tailored support, with a particular focus on improving phonics, speech, and language development. This position is ideal for a candidate who has practical SEN experience and a clear understanding of the challenges these children encounter in both academic and social contexts.

In this role, you will work closely with class teachers and support staff to implement structured learning plans that promote communication skills and help pupils manage their behaviour. You will be responsible for adapting teaching methods to suit a range of individual learning needs and ensuring that every child receives the right support to thrive. Your contribution will be vital in helping young learners develop the necessary skills to build confidence and achieve their potential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 support and small group interventions for Key Stage 1 pupils with additional needs
  • Assist in the delivery of tailored learning activities, including support with phonics and speech/language development
  • Work with class teachers to implement personalised learning and behavioural support plans
  • Monitor pupil progress and share observations with the teaching team
  • Support children in managing social interactions and behaviour in the classroom
  • Follow the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies at all times

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with pupils with ASC, ADHD, and other additional needs
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
