Teaching Assistant 

Location: Littlehampton
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (SEN Department)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Littlehampton is seeking a Teaching Assistant to join the SEN department and provide targeted support to pupils with additional needs. In this role, you will work closely with children who require extra assistance to access their education, focusing on those with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). You will help create a structured learning environment and implement tailored interventions to support the varied challenges that these pupils face, both academically and socially.

You will be responsible for delivering one-to-one and group support, collaborating with teachers and the wider SEN team to ensure that individual learning plans are effectively implemented. The ideal candidate will have clear, demonstrable experience working with children with additional needs and a deep understanding of the unique challenges associated with ASC and ADHD. A patient, empathetic approach combined with practical experience in managing these challenges is essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualised and group support to pupils within the SEN department
  • Assist in the implementation of tailored learning plans and interventions
  • Work closely with teachers and SEN staff to adapt classroom activities for pupils with ASC and ADHD
  • Support pupils in managing behaviour and overcoming challenges in accessing the curriculum
  • Monitor and document pupil progress to inform future strategies
  • Uphold the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
