Location: Chichester
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (SEN Support – Temporary)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Chichester is seeking a Teaching Assistant to join their SEN team on a temporary contract until the summer holidays, with the possibility of extension from September based on pupil needs. In this role, you will work directly with children who have additional needs, providing both one-to-one and small group support. You will help these pupils overcome barriers to learning by assisting with their academic, social, and emotional development. The school values candidates who can demonstrate clear, practical experience of working with children with additional needs.

You will be responsible for implementing established support plans and assisting teachers in creating a structured learning environment. The role requires a solid understanding of the challenges faced by pupils with special educational needs, such as autism, ADHD, communication difficulties, and behaviour issues. You must be prepared to work with children in various settings, both indoors and outdoors, and to adapt your approach based on the specific needs of each pupil.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with additional needs
  • Assist in implementing personalised learning and behavioural support plans
  • Work with teachers to adapt classroom activities for children with SEN
  • Support pupils in managing their academic tasks, social interactions, and emotional challenges
  • Monitor pupil progress and record outcomes
  • Follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with children with additional needs such as autism, ADHD, and behaviour challenges
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
