Teaching Assistant (KS1)

Location: Brighton
Job Title: Teaching Assistant
Hours: 5 afternoons a week, 12:00 to 15:00/15:30 (Term Time Only, until Summer Holidays)

We are seeking a Teaching Assistant to work with a KS1 pupil who has communication difficulties and struggles with interacting with both peers and adults. The child, who shows tendencies associated with Autism Spectrum Condition, requires a dedicated support worker who can build a relationship of trust and create learning opportunities in both the classroom and outside the classroom. You will play an essential role in helping the pupil develop their communication skills and discover a love for school through varied and practical learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 support to the KS1 pupil with communication challenges, delivering individualised assistance
  • Work with the pupil in small groups and, when needed, within whole-class settings
  • Build and maintain a trusting relationship to facilitate effective learning and social interaction
  • Create and deliver learning experiences outdoors, using the environment as a resource
  • Assist the class teacher in implementing personalised learning and behaviour support plans
  • Monitor pupil progress and report regularly to the wider school team

Essential Experience/Attributes

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition and ADHD
  • Experience supporting children with communication challenges and social interaction difficulties
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team
  • The ability to remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the pupil’s needs
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
