Learning Support Assistant (SEN)

Location: Burgess Hill
Job Title: Learning Support Assistant
Hours: Initially 12:30 to 15:00 (Term Time Only), with the potential to become full days as quickly as possible

A primary school in Burgess Hill is seeking a Learning Support Assistant to work with Reception and Year 1 pupils with additional needs. In this role, you will provide direct support in both 1:1 and small group settings, helping children access the curriculum and develop their skills. While your primary focus will be on supporting young pupils, you may also be required to assist in other year groups to support the wider team. This is a challenging but rewarding opportunity for an individual with clear, demonstrable SEN experience who understands the unique challenges faced by children with additional needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide targeted 1:1 and small group support to Reception and Year 1 pupils with additional needs
  • Assist in adapting learning activities to ensure every pupil can access and engage with the curriculum
  • Support children’s social and academic development, monitoring their progress and communicating effectively with staff
  • Work under the direction of class teachers and the wider team, including occasional support in other year groups
  • Maintain a structured and safe learning environment by following school safeguarding and behavioural policies

Essential Experience/Attributes

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with pupils with additional needs, including those with social, communication or behavioural challenges
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
