Teaching Assistant (SEN – Autism Support)

Location: Worthing
Job Title: Teaching Assistant
Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 15:30 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Worthing is looking for a teaching assistant with strong experience supporting children with autism. This role involves working closely with pupils who face social challenges, experience demand avoidance (PDA), and may present with behavioural challenges. An understanding of sensory breaks, emotional dysregulation, and strategies to support children with complex needs is essential. The ideal candidate will have experience in an educational or care setting, providing structured and compassionate support to children with additional needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with autism, tailoring learning to their needs
  • Implement strategies to support emotional regulation, sensory needs, and structured learning routines
  • Assist with communication development and encourage social interactions in a way that meets the child’s needs
  • Work alongside the SENCo and teaching staff to adapt lessons and ensure accessibility for all learners
  • Support children in managing transitions and developing independence within the school environment
  • Follow safeguarding and behaviour policies to maintain a safe and structured setting

Essential Experience/Attributes

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Experience working with autism, including PDA, sensory regulation, and emotional dysregulation
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic, and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations, and respond to the needs of the pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
