Teaching Assistant (Speech and Language)
Location: Littlehampton
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (Speech and Language)
Hours: Half days, Monday to Friday (Term Time Only)

A primary school in [Location] is seeking a Teaching Assistant with a focus on Speech and Language to support pupils across the school. This role involves working 1:1, in small groups, and within whole-class settings to help children develop their communication and language skills. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children, either in an educational setting or another relevant environment, and must be able to demonstrate an ability to support language development. Experience with phonics and non-verbal communication methods would be advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support pupils in developing their speech, language, and communication skills through targeted interventions
  • Work 1:1, in small groups, and within the whole class to ensure all pupils can access learning effectively
  • Implement phonics-based activities and assist children in improving their pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence structure
  • Use a variety of strategies, including visual aids and communication tools, to support non-verbal and minimally verbal pupils
  • Collaborate with teachers and external speech and language professionals to implement support plans
  • Monitor progress and adapt support to meet the evolving needs of the pupils

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Experience working with children in an educational or related setting
  • Proven ability to support language development in young learners
  • Knowledge of phonics programmes and experience working with non-verbal children is desirable
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with school staff and external specialists
  • A DBS check on the update service or willingness to obtain one
  • Patient, adaptable, and enthusiastic about helping children develop confidence in their communication skills
