Teaching Assistant (Reception & Year 1 – SEN Support)
Location: Burgess Hill
Job Title: Teaching Assistant (SEN)
Hours: Afternoons Only (with the intention to increase to full school days)

A primary school in Burgess Hill is seeking a Teaching Assistant to support children in Reception and Year 1 with additional needs. This role is ideal for someone with experience working with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and ADHD, either in a nursery or primary school setting. You will play a vital role in helping young learners with their speech and language development, behaviour, and engagement in early education, ensuring they feel supported and included in their learning environment.

Initially, this position will be afternoons only, with the intention to extend to a full school day as soon as possible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils in Reception and Year 1 with additional needs
  • Adapt activities to suit children with ASC, ADHD, and speech and language delays
  • Assist in managing early years behaviour challenges using effective strategies tailored to young children
  • Support pupils in developing communication, social skills, and independence
  • Work closely with teachers and the SENCo to implement EHCP targets and track pupil progress
  • Build positive relationships with pupils and create a safe, engaging learning environment

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Experience supporting children with ASC and ADHD in nursery or primary school settings
  • Understanding of the challenges of speech and language development and behaviour in the early years
  • Ability to demonstrate examples of supporting children with additional needs in a school or nursery environment
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff and families
  • A DBS check on the update service or willingness to obtain one
  • Patient, adaptable, and proactive in meeting young learners’ needs
