A primary school in Horsham is seeking a reliable and empathetic Learning Support Assistant to work one-to-one with a pupil who has Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). In this role, you will provide vital support both inside the classroom -helping the child engage with lessons and tasks – and outside the classroom, guiding them through activities, transitions, and social interactions. Applicants must have a solid understanding of autism and previous experience working with children who have ASC. Patience, adaptability, and a positive attitude are crucial for success in this role, as you will help the child build confidence, manage daily challenges, and develop essential life skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Offer 1:1 support to a pupil with ASC, adapting learning and communication strategies to individual needs
- Work inside the classroom during lessons and activities, as well as outside for breaks, transitions, and other planned sessions
- Recognise the unique challenges and nuances of ASC, adjusting your approach accordingly
- Communicate regularly with the teaching team, providing insights on progress, challenges, and successes
- Maintain a calm and structured environment, fostering emotional regulation and positive behaviour
Essential Experience/Attributes:
- Demonstrable experience supporting children with ASC or other additional needs
- Strong grasp of how autism affects children differently, and the ability to tailor your support accordingly
- Reliability, punctuality, and consistency—essential for building trust and rapport
- Patience, adaptability, and a warm, encouraging demeanour
- A DBS check on the update service or willingness to obtain one
