Speech and Language Teaching Assistant

Job Title: Speech and Language Teaching Assistant
Hours: Full-time – Term Time Only

A primary school in Littlehampton is seeking a dedicated Speech and Language Teaching Assistant to support children’s individual speech, language, and communication needs across all year groups. Working 1:1, in small groups, and sometimes in whole-class settings, you will play a vital role in helping pupils develop the skills they need to express themselves confidently and engage effectively in their learning. If you hold a speech and language qualification or have clear experience supporting pupils’ speech, language, and communication development, we’d love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide focused support to pupils with varying speech and language needs, including 1:1 sessions and small group interventions
  • Collaborate with class teachers and the SENCo to devise and implement communication strategies
  • Adapt resources and activities to meet each child’s communication targets, tracking progress and adjusting approaches as needed
  • Encourage pupils’ confidence and participation during whole-class sessions, helping them practise and refine their communication skills
  • Maintain regular records and communicate with staff and families to share updates on pupils’ development

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Either a recognised speech and language qualification or extensive experience supporting speech, language, and communication needs
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt strategies for children of different ages and abilities
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, parents, and external professionals
  • A DBS check on the update service or willingness to obtain one
  • Patient, empathetic, and able to foster a positive learning environment for all pupils
