Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Job Title: HLTA (Full-Time/Part-Time Options)

A primary school in Worthing is seeking a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join their team. This role is ideal for candidates who either hold an HLTA qualification, have previously worked at HLTA level, are qualified teachers looking to step back from full-time teaching, or teaching assistants with significant classroom experience and proven ability to lead lessons. The successful candidate will work alongside class teachers to deliver high-quality learning experiences, cover lessons as needed, and support the wider school community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide lesson cover and lead group sessions, ensuring continuity of learning when the class teacher is absent
  • Work with teachers to plan and deliver engaging activities that address varying pupil needs and abilities
  • Support children in both whole-class and targeted small-group contexts, using differentiated approaches
  • Monitor pupil progress, share observations with staff, and adapt strategies for maximum impact
  • Maintain a positive learning environment, upholding the school’s behaviour and safeguarding policies

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Either a recognised HLTA qualification, prior HLTA experience, QTS, or significant experience as a TA with demonstrable teaching responsibilities
  • Strong understanding of effective classroom practice, differentiation, and curriculum delivery
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and confidently lead sessions in a primary school setting
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, working seamlessly within the wider school team
  • A DBS check on the update service or willingness to obtain one
