Are you passionate about creating a supportive and nurturing environment for children with additional needs? A primary school in the Chichester area is looking for a KS1 SEN Teaching Assistant who can work confidently with pupils exhibiting challenging behaviour. You will play a crucial role in helping young learners settle into their routines, develop social skills, and grow in confidence. By using clear strategies and a patient approach, you will guide children as they learn to regulate their emotions, engage with tasks, and make progress in both academic and personal development.
In this position, you’ll collaborate closely with class teachers and the SENCo to tailor interventions for individuals or small groups. This may include de-escalation techniques, social stories, or structured routines to help pupils feel secure. You’ll have the opportunity to positively influence children’s behaviour and self-esteem, fostering a classroom culture where everyone feels valued and able to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- Work 1:1 or in small groups with KS1 pupils who display challenging behaviour, providing tailored support and guidance.
- Implement behaviour management strategies and structured routines to promote emotional regulation and a calm learning environment.
- Assist the class teacher in creating differentiated resources and lesson plans that cater to the diverse needs of each child.
- Encourage pupils’ social and emotional development, helping them build resilience and confidence.
- Regularly observe and track progress, collaborating with the SENCo and wider school team to adapt interventions as necessary.
- Uphold the school’s safeguarding and behaviour policies, contributing to a safe and inclusive atmosphere.
Essential Experience/Attributes
- Experience working with children who exhibit challenging behaviour, ideally within a primary school or similar setting.
- Strong understanding of strategies for behaviour management and emotional regulation, particularly for KS1 pupils.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, and parents.
- A DBS check registered on the update service, or a willingness to obtain one.
- Patient, resilient, and empathetic, with a flexible approach to meeting children’s evolving needs.
