Location: Chichester
Job Title: Part-Time Teaching Assistant
Hours: 2-3 days per week (08:30 to 15:30)

 

We are seeking a dedicated Part-Time Teaching Assistant to work 1:1 with a Year 2 child with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). This role requires an experienced, patient, and empathetic professional who can use supportive language and demonstrate a strong understanding of PDA. You will be part of the school’s nurture team, helping to create a positive, supportive environment for the child and others as needed.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide consistent, 1:1 support to a Year 2 child with SEMH needs, focusing on understanding their unique needs and triggers.
  • Build a deep, trusting relationship with the child using calm, supportive language and low-demand approaches that help avoid escalation.
  • Collaborate closely with the nurture team to support the child’s emotional and social development.
  • Adapt language, communication style, and approaches to best support the child’s PDA profile, maintaining a structured, safe environment.
  • Contribute to a wider range of nurture activities and assist team members with other students as needed.
  • Monitor and report on progress, maintaining regular communication with the team and family where appropriate.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children with SEMH needs, particularly with challenging behaviour and PDA.
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach, with the ability to remain composed in challenging situations.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset to work effectively within a team.
  • Ability to use supportive language and adopt strategies that minimize anxiety and build positive rapport.
  • Understanding of nurture-based approaches and strategies for creating a stable, secure learning environment.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
