Teaching Assistant (SEMH and Reintegration Specialist)

Location: Brighton
Job Title: Afternoon Teaching Assistant
Hours: Afternoons Only, Monday to Friday (with potential for increased hours)

 

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Afternoon Teaching Assistant in Brighton to support a Year 1 child who is being gradually reintegrated into school. Working alongside the school’s wider SEN team, you will play a key role in helping this young student reconnect with the joy of learning. This position focuses on creating a supportive and adaptable environment that uses the child’s unique interests to make school enjoyable, with a gentle introduction to the curriculum as they grow more comfortable. Additionally, you may provide general support to other children with additional needs as needed.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer 1:1 support to a Year 1 child, using their interests to engage them positively in the school environment.
  • Work with the school to identify the child’s specific triggers and needs, helping to create a structured, supportive environment.
  • Collaborate closely with teaching staff to slowly reintroduce curriculum topics in ways that are accessible and enjoyable for the child.
  • Use engaging and flexible approaches to make learning fun and gradually build the child’s confidence in attending school.
  • Provide general assistance to other children with additional needs as required, fostering a caring and inclusive environment.
  • Monitor and report progress, working with the school team to adapt strategies as the child’s confidence develops.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children with SEMH needs and challenging behaviours, particularly in reintegration or transition settings.
  • Patient, flexible, and adaptable approach to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Strong understanding of how to use a child’s interests to engage them and make learning enjoyable.
  • Ability to create a warm, supportive environment that prioritizes the child’s emotional well-being.
  • Effective communication skills and a team-oriented mindset to work collaboratively with the school.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
