Job Title: Teaching Assistant (Speech and Language)
Hours: 08:30 to 15:30
 
We are seeking a Teaching Assistant with a focus on supporting non-verbal or minimally verbal children in developing their communication skills in Worthing. The successful candidate will possess expertise in alternative communication methods and familiarity with visual aids and communication devices. While experience with speech therapy techniques is ideal, it is not essential. You will help address the developmental challenges associated with delayed speech and language, including building confidence, enhancing peer relationships, and enabling access to the curriculum.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support non-verbal and minimally verbal children in their communication development.
  • Implement alternative communication methods to aid understanding and interaction.
  • Collaborate with teachers and specialists to monitor student progress.
  • Create a supportive environment that encourages confidence and peer engagement.
  • Use visual aids and resources to facilitate learning and expression.
  • Provide feedback and support strategies for children struggling with speech and language challenges.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs.
  • Experience in alternative communication methods and visual aids.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
  • A patient, empathetic, and nurturing approach.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team.
  • The ability to be adaptable, remain calm in challenging situations, and respond to the needs of the pupils.
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies.
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling, or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably.
