SEN Teaching Assistant

Job Title: SEN Teaching Assistant
Hours: Full-time (Term Time)

A Littlehampton primary school is seeking a SEN Teaching Assistant with a strong understanding of Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Children may present with SEMH challenges due to conditions such as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), trauma, or challenging backgrounds. Pupils often struggle with emotional regulation, may experience anxiety or depression, and require a nurturing, patient approach to help them navigate the school day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 or group support to children with SEMH needs, helping them manage emotions and regulate behaviour.
  • Implement strategies to reduce anxiety, boost self-esteem, and encourage engagement with academic and social activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCo, and external professionals to ensure each child’s emotional and educational needs are met.
  • Offer a calm, supportive presence, using de-escalation techniques when pupils feel overwhelmed.
  • Track progress and maintain records, adapting approaches as needed to ensure pupils remain engaged and feel understood.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Proven experience working with children with additional needs (ASC, trauma, or other SEMH indicators).
  • Confident in managing complex behaviours and supporting pupils in building resilience.
  • DBS check registered on the update service or willingness to obtain one.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to liaise with colleagues, pupils, and families effectively.
  • Patient, nurturing, and flexible, with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
