Individual Needs Assistant (INA) for Year 4 Pupil

Location: Brighton
Job Title: Individual Needs Assistant (INA)
Hours: Full-time

We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Individual Needs Assistant (INA) to work 1:1 with a Year 4 child with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) at a school in Brighton. The child is academically operating approximately two years behind their peers and will require tailored support to help them engage with the curriculum and reach their full potential. While the child has a sweet and gentle nature, they come from a previous educational setting where boundaries were less structured, leading to some behavioural challenges that will require a patient, consistent, and understanding approach.

This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in supporting children with additional needs, who can provide structure, foster positive behaviour, and build a trusting relationship with the child to help them feel secure and motivated to learn.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 support to a Year 4 child with ASC, ensuring lessons and activities are accessible and engaging.
  • Adapt the curriculum to meet the child’s developmental level and learning needs, ensuring they feel supported and included.
  • Establish clear and consistent boundaries to support positive behaviour, while maintaining a nurturing and patient approach.
  • Build a trusting and positive relationship with the child to encourage confidence and engagement in the classroom.
  • Collaborate with teachers and SENCo to implement and adapt support plans, ensuring consistency in strategies and expectations.
  • Monitor and report progress, behaviour, and any concerns to the SENCo and class teacher.
  • Create a calm and structured environment that encourages learning and development.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Proven experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and behavioural challenges.
  • Ability to adapt learning activities to suit developmental levels, with knowledge of strategies to engage children operating below age expectations.
  • Strong understanding of behaviour management techniques, particularly in setting and maintaining clear boundaries.
  • Patient, empathetic, and nurturing approach to working with children with additional needs.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, SENCo, and other staff.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
  • Qualifications in special educational needs, child development, or related fields are desirable but not essential.
