Key Stage 1 Learning Support Assistant (SEMH and Focus Support)

Location: Worthing
Job Title: Key Stage 1 Learning Support Assistant
Hours: Full-time

We are seeking a compassionate and proactive Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to work with a Key Stage 1 child experiencing Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges, developmental delays, and difficulties with maintaining focus. This role requires someone who understands the unique needs of children who may find traditional classroom environments overwhelming or struggle to engage with learning. The ideal candidate will be able to build a strong rapport with the child, foster emotional regulation, and tailor their approach to make learning accessible and enjoyable.

Children with SEMH needs may face difficulties managing emotions, forming positive relationships, or feeling secure within a school environment. Developmental delays and focus challenges often require breaking tasks into manageable steps and creating a calm, structured learning atmosphere. Your role will be to provide consistent support, enabling the child to thrive socially and academically.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 support to a Key Stage 1 child with SEMH, developmental delays, and focus challenges, ensuring their individual needs are met.
  • Use tailored strategies to support emotional regulation, foster concentration, and promote engagement in classroom activities.
  • Break down tasks into manageable steps and use scaffolding techniques to ensure understanding and success.
  • Work closely with the class teacher and SENCo to implement and adapt support strategies, ensuring a consistent approach.
  • Foster a nurturing and secure relationship with the child, encouraging confidence and resilience.
  • Monitor progress and behaviours, providing feedback to teaching staff and contributing to any required intervention plans.
  • Support the child’s social development, encouraging positive interactions with peers and the wider school community.

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Proven experience working with children with SEMH needs, developmental delays, and focus challenges.
  • Strong understanding of strategies for promoting emotional regulation, focus, and engagement in learning.
  • Ability to create a calm and structured environment to support children in feeling secure and confident.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, SENCo, and other staff.
  • Patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach to supporting children with additional needs.
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one.
  • Qualifications in special educational needs, child development, or a related field are desirable but not essential.

If you’re a dedicated Learning Support Assistant with a passion for helping children overcome challenges and thrive, apply today to join a caring and supportive school community!
